Acupuncture in treatment of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders of orchestra musicians?

Abstract:
Playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD) play a major role among musicians. The rate of 38.5% of pre-retirement among German orchestra musicians is high compared to the rate of 20.8 % of the art-related working people in theater including singers.  Reasons for PRMD are overuse with the appearance of repetitive strain injury (RSI), a closed cinematic chain due to the instrumental requirements, technical skill problems, distress and fear of pre-retirement and inability to earn a living. Patients do not follow doctors’ proposal and medical doctors are not satisfied with the quality of medical health care. The view on the evidence of acupuncture as a complementary treatment of musculoskeletal disorders could be helpful - yet it is not commonly used in the treatment of PRMD. No research has been found. In our paper we provide a brief overview about the background of acupuncture, give patient examples of treatments of PRMD with acupuncture and discuss the possible benefits.
